Patient Verification Required
Maine law requires that cannabis retail stores verify that all customers are registered patients in the Maine Medical Marijuana Program before allowing entry into limited access areas or selling any cannabis or cannabis products.
No exceptions are permitted for any reason, regardless of appearance or circumstances.
Required by: MRS Title 22, §504(4)(A)-(B)
To purchase medical cannabis, you must present the following:
- A valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID
- A valid, unexpired Maine Medical Marijuana Program patient card
Both documents are required for every transaction. Thank you for your cooperation.
Failing to verify patient status is a serious violation:
- Sale to an unregistered person: license suspension, revocation, and fines up to $10,000
- Possible criminal penalties for staff and management
- Employee termination and disqualification from future cannabis employment
- Personal liability for team members who failed to verify patient status
Remember: Every employee is personally responsible for patient verification. “I didn’t know” is not a valid defense.
If you suspect a fake or altered ID:
- Request a second form of identification.
- Ask verification questions based on ID details (address, ZIP code, etc.).
- Consult with a manager immediately.
- Politely refuse service if any doubts remain.
- Document the incident in the refusal log, including ID details.
Avoid these frequent compliance errors:
- Assuming patient status based on appearance or prior visits.
- Accepting expired IDs or patient cards—even if recently expired.
- Rushing verification checks during busy periods.
- Failing to record refusals in the compliance log.
- Accepting photocopies or digital images of IDs or patient cards.
- Granting exceptions for friends or regular customers.
Post this notice conspicuously at all store entrances and point-of-sale stations.
